Idea Development in Groups

Workshop About Making a Music Video

Workshop About Making a Music Video

Today I learned about making a music video and what needs to be done to make the production a success.

I first learned that in the music industry there are a lot more solo artists than bands. This is because people have their own styles of music and it is hard to find a group people that have the same collaborative ideas as you.

A solo artist's biggest selling point is how they portray themselves. In 2021, an artists personality is important because they need to individually stand out amongst the rest. An example of this is Adele. Adele is very funny and has gained fans because of her comedic personality.

Solo artists can also change their star persona much easier than bands can. Billie Eilish used to have green and black hair, wear out-of-the ordinary clothing, and act unusual. Recently, Billie has dyed her hair blonde and released 'Happier Than Ever.' The album is softer with a lot less trap and more jazz.

Solo artist's music videos are also a lot harder to make. Solo artist's need 4+ scenes in their music videos to keep the audience engaged. Their music videos can also sometimes tell a story.

In a band, each band member will promote their song on social media which means that the music might get to more people. But with a band, it means that there is more of a chance that the band will get 'cancelled' because there are multiple artists. A band does not have a 'star persona,' in every band the singer is always the person that gets the most publicity and is seen as the 'head' of the band.

Bands are also more fun to watch live. Bands have been starting to dominate the festival scene, which helps them gain popularity and book other shows.

Bands cannot change their star persona's like solo artists can. For example, Fifth Harmony split up because each artist wanted to go their separate ways.

Star Persona

 Star Persona

  • The brand image that is built for an artist or band
  • Something which appeals to their audience and sells their music
  • What people expect when they see a video by that artist / band
  • Their 'reputation'
  • Some artists change their persona i.e have a new era more frequently than others. like taylor swift.

  • constructed using:
    • makeup and costumes
    • lyrics
    • body language and facial expressions
    • behaviour and attitude
    • music videos
    • social media posts and websites

An example of someone with a star persona that changes a lot is Taylor Swift. She has had many different eras and she changes her persona every few months - mostly whenever she releases a new album.

Because Taylor is re releasing her album RED, she changed her website to fit the aesthetic of that era. Each era of hers has different colours and she changes what she is singing about. For example, in her reputation era, she wore a lot of black and her music videos were edgier and about breakups. In her Lover era, everything was pastel and a lot warmer than reputation.

Researching Music Videos in Similar Genres

Researching Music Videos in Similar Genres

'Material Girl' - Madonna

'Dear Future Husband' - Meghan Trainor

'The Man' - Taylor Swift

The first comparison I noticed was between 'Dear Future Husband' and 'Material Girl.' Both music videos feature the colours pink and red. The red uniforms represent danger, as in 'dangerous woman' whereas the pink represents love and affection.  Also, both music videos have men dressed in the same uniform, coddling each woman Both Madonna and Meghan are in control, which represents a powerful woman going against a patriarchal society. Each music video also has a lot of mid shots and close ups to show off each woman's body. This is to give the idea that they are sexy, powerful and liberated from men.

The second comparison I found was that the men in these music videos were made out to be seen as annoying and inferior. The men in 'Material Girl' and 'Dear Future Husband' are subordinate to the women and doing everything they can to please them. The women in these two music videos look down upon the men which challenges gender roles by swapping the stereotypical sociological roles of each sex. In 'The Man,' the man in the music video is seen as unlikable from the audience's perspective. In all three music videos the men are portrayed in a negative light.

The audience that would be interested in this type of genre is teen girls. This is because teen girls can feel empowered by these songs.

What People Thought About My Song

What People Thought About My Song

  • Use of LED coloured lights
  • Flashing lights
  • Easy to build a consistent editing pace
  •  Use of close ups and long shots
  • Silk blowing around
  • Good beat

My classmates really liked my song and thought that I could do a lot with it. I don't think I will use this song because a better one was played in class.

Coursework Essay

In this essay I discussed representations, branding, audiences and conventions used in my products.
