Lighting Workshop

 Lighting Workshop

In this workshop I learned about the different types of lighting I could use for my music video.

One light I learned about was key light. Key light is the main source of an artificial light that someone uses when they are shooting a scene. Key lights can be used to illuminate a subject at specific moments. Another light that I learned about was the fill light. Like the key light, it illuminates its subject, but the fill lights focus is to lift the shadows created by the key lights. Next, I learned that if you put a trace on a light, it creates a a softening effect. This is good for scenes that are not harsh and for calm music videos. Another powerful light is the blonde light. This light is great for lighting large areas, and it is good if you have a big set. Also, the three-point lighting that I also learned about helps to light up a subject whilst eliminating the shadows around it.

The next types of lighting I learned about are beauty lighting. These types of lighting make the subject look better and they are used a lot in the beauty industry. First, I learned about using a ring light. The ring light became popular when Kylie Jenner started to use it in 2016. It has since been nicknamed diva lighting as it used by a lot of female beauty influencers. Another type of beauty lighting is bathroom lighting. If you’ve ever go into a hotel bathroom and notice why you look so good in the lighting – that is the bathroom lighting effect.

Another type of lighting is the blade runner lighting. This is used in a lot of sci-fi films because it makes everything look super extraterrestrial and futuristic. In my school’s studio there is also these light bars that light up in many different colours.

If I am in charge of lighting for the day I want to use a lot of beauty lighting techniques and some red LED lighting because it will add to the sensualness of my music video.
